What is TMJ/TMD?

TMJ/TMD is a condition that causes chronic headaches, back, neck, and shoulder pain, and several other painful symptoms. Oftentimes these symptoms are not immediately associated with a misaligned bite, and you can endure years of suffering before being properly diagnosed.

Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) is a condition in which your bite becomes misaligned, causing many serious painful health problems. Sometimes the acronym TMJ will be used interchangeably with TMD, but TMJ actually stands for temporomandibular joint. Neuromuscular dentistry differs from traditional dentistry in that neuromuscular dentists are trained in proper alignment of the jaw in relation to the muscles that control its function. Over 15% of American adults suffer from chronic facial pain related to the temporomandibular joint.

Treating the Root Cause of TMJ: Malocclusion

Neuromuscular dentists like Dr. Jana Gyurina first measure the most relaxed position of your jaw to determine the goal for normal jaw positioning. Then she’ll work to realign the bite and restore the teeth and thus the jaw and joints to their optimal position. Once the bite is realigned and the jaw is in place, the pain that resulted from the imbalance disappears.

Malocclusion means “bad bite”

In most cases, TMJ disorders stem from a condition called malocclusion, which means having a “bad bite”. Malocclusion means that your upper and lower teeth do not close together in the correct way, but are misaligned often as the result of accidents or trauma. Underbites or overbites are an example of malocclusion.

When the teeth are misaligned, they cannot provide the support the muscles in the face need for chewing and swallowing. These muscles are then forced into a strained position, resulting in pain throughout the face, head, arms, shoulders, and back. Although a person may have beautiful teeth or had orthodontics to line the teeth up for aesthetic reasons, the muscles and joints may not be comfortable.

Dr. Gyurina is a neuromuscular dentist and will treat this root cause!

Frequently Asked Questions

Read answers to questions our patients often ask about Esthetic dentistry.

How is TMJ/TMD diagnosed by Dr. Gyurina?

Diagnosing can be difficult but Dr. Gyurina uses a high-tech scientific diagnostic approach called Neuromuscular dentistry to produce objective data to guide your TMJ/TMD treatment. Sound analysis, muscle tension measurements, and precision jaw tracking can help us see the extent of your TMJ. We may also use our CBCT imaging system to view your jaw and tissues in detail. There will also be a patient questionnaire which will help us determine other issues that may be connected.

What are the symptoms of TMD?

Headaches, popping or clicking in the jaw, earaches, tinnitus or ringing in the ears, the tension in the shoulders or upper back, neck pain, and more serious conditions are all related to TMJ or TMD. Since important facial nerves pass through the jaw, misalignment may compress these nerves and cause a variety of painful symptoms. It’s important to also consult your primary care doctor since some of these issues may be related to an underlying medical condition, however, if the symptoms remain undiagnosed by your medical doctor they may be related to misalignment of the jaw.

How soon will I notice the benefits of treatment for my TMJ/TMD?

Once you decide to start treatment with Dr. Gyurina, you’ll be able to look forward to relief almost immediately. Dr. Gyurina will often begin with a temporary splint or orthotic much like a sports mouthguard you’ll wear at night. If your symptoms decrease, we’ll confirm the results by repeating our diagnostics to confirm the muscles and body is adapting to the new positioning of the jaw and bite. Once we’re certain this new bite position will result in your symptoms resolving, we’ll use a series of options from orthodontics, tooth shape adjustment, and more to adjust your bite permanently to address alignment concerns which will put your jaw in a natural position and alleviate the pain.

Will my insurance cover the cost of TMD/TMJ treatment?

Our wonderful staff will work with you to see if your insurance company will cover your cosmetic procedures. If for any reason it's not covered, we will let you know and will work with you to develop a financial plan if needed. Our patients often tell us that it's completely worth the investment of their time and money to improve the appearance of their smile.

Are there payment options available?

Yes, ask our office about financing options or payment plans. CareCredit® offers reasonable interest rates for patients who need to finance their dental care.
