Cosmetic Gum Lifts
Gums are a key part of the overall health of your mouth. They support your teeth and help ensure that your smile stays full and bright. But excessive gum growth can eclipse the natural shine of your teeth and detract from the beauty of your smile. To correct long gums or a crooked gumline, Oak Park Dental offers cosmetic gum lifts.
There are many causes of excessive or uneven gum growth, from genetics to hormone changes to certain medications to periodontal disease. A "gummy smile" presents no health risks in itself, but many people dislike the look of it, as it covers up what could be a beautiful, glistening smile.
A gum lift, also known as gum contouring or gingivectomy, is the process of removing excess tissue from the gumline to expose more of the tooth enamel. This allows the gums to be shortened and reshaped, returning your teeth to their most attractive, natural-looking length. If you are concerned that too much of your gums show when you smile, this procedure may be right for you.
Options for Your Gingivectomy
Gum contouring can be completed using traditional cut-and-stitch methods or with our state-of-the-art Electrosurge soft tissue laser. While the word "laser" may sound frightening, laser gum contouring is as safe as traditional methods and has been approved by the FDA since 1990. Our dentists are adept in both approaches, and will consult with you about what will be most effective in your case. While traditional surgery is tried and true, laser surgery is known to have a faster healing time and a reduced risk of infection. Whichever method is best suited to you, you are in good hands.
